Type Locality and Naming

Save Basin (Southeastern Zimbabwe). Named for local geographic features within the Save Basin (historically the Sabi Basin) of southeastern Zimbabwe. Upper formation in Ecca Gr in Save Basin

Lithology and Thickness

A mixed terrestrial clastic sequence consisting predominantly of mudstones and grits (coarse, angular sandstones). 


Lithology Pattern: 
Clayey sandstone


Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Conformably overlies the Marare Coaly Shale Fm and the underlying Mkwasine Grits and Mudstones Fm (or Malilongwe Shale).

Upper contact

Conformably overlain by the Mkururwe Alternations Unit Fm (which is the regional equivalent of the Molteno Fm).

Regional extent

Geographically restricted to the Save Basin in southeastern Zimbabwe. Upper Ecca Gr to basal Beaufort Gr equivalent in the eastern rift basins. It is chronostratigraphically related to the upper portions of the coal-bearing sequences in southern Africa.
